Menopause is a natural life transition, a phase that can bring uncertainty, discomfort, and big changes to our bodies and daily lives. It can affect energy, mood, and how we feel in our own skin. With the right support and self-care, it can also be a time to understand our bodies better, nurture ourselves, and find ways to live more comfortably and confidently through this stage.
On average, women spend a third to half of their lives post-menopause, which could be decades of new possibilities and growth. This makes it the perfect time to pause, reflect, and think: what do I want from this next chapter, and how can I support myself to thrive?
As a reflexologist myself, I’ve seen how transformative gentle, mindful care can be. I’m also on this journey personally — at 44, I’m navigating the early changes of perimenopause. I understand the overwhelm, the unpredictable symptoms, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with this stage of life.
Why Menopause Can Feel Overwhelming
Many women I meet have spent decades juggling careers, family, home life, and other responsibilities. Then menopause arrives, and suddenly those familiar routines feel more challenging. Symptoms like hot flushes, anxiety, fatigue, low mood, brain fog, and disrupted sleep can feel like a full-time job on top of everything else.
It’s no wonder so many feel depleted, stressed, or unsure where to begin. The key is finding ways to support yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally, so you can navigate this transition with more ease and confidence.
Building Your Personal Wellbeing Toolbox
When I work with clients, we talk about creating a personalised toolkit for wellbeing, practical, simple steps that you can rely on daily. I like to focus on five pillars of support:
Nutrition – nourishing your body to maintain energy and hormonal balance
Movement & Exercise – gentle stretching, yoga, walking, or whatever feels right
Sleep & Rest – prioritising downtime and creating restful routines
Life Transitions – reflecting on purpose, career, relationships, and personal growth
Relaxation & Stress Management – daily rituals that calm your nervous system
Each of these pillars contributes to your overall balance, but today I want to focus on relaxation something I see make a huge difference for women during this stage of life.
Why Relaxation Matters
As our oestrogen and progesterone levels drop, our bodies are more sensitive to stress. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can have a stronger effect, making anxiety, irritability, and low mood more pronounced. Life’s everyday demands, teenage children, ageing parents, work pressures can amplify these feelings.
This is where taking intentional time to pause, breathe, and reset becomes essential. Even small acts of self-care can have a profound impact:
Journaling: Spend 10–15 minutes freewriting your thoughts or listing what you’re grateful for.
Mindful walking: Step outside, leave your phone behind, and notice the world around you.
Digital breaks: Reducing screen time to lower anxiety triggers.
Creative or social classes: Stimulate your mind and connect with others.
Relaxing therapies: Reflexology, massage, or other treatments to calm your nervous system.
How Reflexology Can Support You
Reflexology is a gentle, hands-on therapy that works through the feet to support the whole body. Its benefits include:
Calming the nervous system, encouraging relaxation and stress relief
Supporting circulation and energy flow, which aids healing
Boosting lymphatic function, helping reduce inflammation and sluggishness
Encouraging hormonal balance, which can ease menopausal symptoms
Many of my clients notice improvements after regular treatments: better sleep, fewer hot flushes, more emotional stability, and a renewed sense of confidence and energy. Like any self-care practice, consistency is key — 4–6 are recommended sessions initially, then maintenance to sustain the benefits.
